Predicting the Future

I am always interested in predicitions about the future.

"As we begin a new year, BBC Future has compiled 40 intriguing predictions made by scientists, politicians, journalists, bloggers and other assorted pundits in recent years about the shape of the world from 2013 to 2150." (BBC)

  1. A fun exercise. It is difficult to divine the future and I am not good at predicting technological trends (full disclosure: I invested in wearable computing via Xybernaut shares in the 1990s and the founders turned out to be crooks according to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xybernaut ) but I would not be surprised if truth turns out to be stranger than fiction in some cases.

    (1) The cybernetic brain implants from Johnny Mnemonic come to mind; if one could take the data and synthesize it then surely learning as we know it becomes obsolete?
    (2) Wither handwriting: I think that (in the advanced economies with higher median incomes)the new generation of children may be amongst the last to be able to write by hand. There is such brain plasticity, particularly at a young age that the proliferation of tablet computing via finger pointing and hand waving and the intuitive nature of the paradigm makes it almost obsolete for young children to do many things by long hand?
    We shall see
